What is a periodic inventory system?

What is a periodic inventory system?

Solution

A periodic inventory system is a method of inventory accounting in which no continuous record of inventory is kept. The inventory balance stays at its beginning value throughout the year and is updated only when a physical count is made at the end of the period.

  • Features:
    • purchases, purchase returns and purchase discounts are recorded in separate accounts;
    • cost of goods sold is not recorded at each sale, but is calculated at year end as the cost of goods available for sale minus ending inventory.
  • Limitation: losses from theft, breakage or waste cannot be identified separately and are hidden in cost of goods sold. No inventory over-and-short account arises.
