Discuss at least five techniques of using language effectively

Discuss at least five techniques of using language effectively.

Solution

Effective language use means choosing words and structures deliberately so the message lands the way the sender intends, and several techniques help achieve this.

Concrete and specific language: name the actual person or thing instead of relying on vague pronouns, so the reader forms a clear mental picture — e.g. writing "Radha is not a good roommate" instead of just "She is not a good roommate."

Active voice: puts the doer of the action first and makes the sentence more direct — "I completed all my assignments" is stronger than "All my assignments were completed." (Passive is still acceptable where the doer is obvious or unimportant, as in "About five hundred demonstrators were arrested.")

Concise language: say the same thing in fewer words — "He joined a private college because the classes are regular there" is tighter than "The reason why he joined a private college was that the classes are regular there."

Familiar/conversational language: match the vocabulary to the audience — a school notice written as "Students who maintain a diet of junk food are exposed to an increased risk of developing obesity" loses parents, while "The school does not allow students to eat junk food as it can cause fatness and heart disease" is instantly clear.

Avoiding double negatives: stacking two negatives can accidentally flip the meaning to positive — "I am not uninterested in doing business" reads as agreement rather than refusal, so a writer should stick to a single, clear negative such as "I am not interested in doing business."
