List any five techniques of using language effectively with an example for each technique

List any five techniques of using language effectively with an example for each technique.

Solution

Using language effectively means shaping a message so it creates the intended effect on the receiver. Five such techniques are:

Use concrete and specific language: replace vague pronouns with named nouns — vague: "She is not a good roommate. I cannot go along with her smoothly. They think we don't have a good relationship." → concrete: "Radha is not a good roommate. I cannot go along with her smoothly. Our friends think we don't have a good relationship."

Use active voice: instead of "All my assignments were completed," write "I completed all my assignments" — the doer is named and the sentence is more direct.

Use concise language: instead of "The reason why he joined a private college was that the classes are regular there," write "He joined a private college because the classes are regular there."

Use precise and clear language: avoid vague words like some or few — instead of "Send some boys to my office," write "Please send me four boys to my office."

Use constructive language: deliver negative feedback so the listener is ready to improve, not defensive — instead of "If you work in this way, I'll have to find an alternative in your place," say "Your performance is not still up to the point, but you will rework and improve it."
